Dog Health FAQ's

HEALTHY EARS
Keeping your dog’s ears clean and hair free is very important. Constant cleaning of the ear canal and plucking of your dogs ears (if required in the particular breed) will stop any wax build up and prevent odour. More importantly cleaning and plucking excess hair helps to prevent infections.

There are many products on the market to help with cleaning your dog’s ears. Epi-Otic is an ear cleaner that is designed to gently remove ear wax and dirt. Another great product is Ear Canker Drops - this controls ear mites as well as reduces wax & smell. If you struggle to pluck the hair out of your dog’s ear, an ear powder may help. This helps improve grip when removing hair. It also helps to keep the ears dry and reduce odours.

NAIL CLIPPING
KeeIf you dog’s nails click against hard floors, they are too long. Your dog’s nails and dew claws require attention. The dew claws are located about 3-10cm above the feet on the inner side of the legs. There is a ‘quick’ blood vessel that runs down the middle of your dog’s nail. It grows as the nail grows, so if you wait a long time between clippings, the quick will grow closer to the end of the nail. This means more likelihood of bleeding during trimming.

Process:
1. Seat your dog securely. Hold the paw firmly and push on his pads to extend the nail. Locate and avoid the quick (in the clear nail you will see a pink colour).
2. Cut the nail below the quick on a 45-degree angle, with the cutting end of the nail clipper toward the end of the nail. With dark nails and larger dogs, you may want to start at the end of the nail and clip in small steps.
3. If you accidentally cut the quick, wipe off the blood and apply a styptic powder to stop the bleeding. This type of accidental injury is not serious and will heal in a very short time.

Helpful Hints:
- Select clippers that are comfortable for you to hold.
- Trim nails a small amount weekly, even if long walks keep them naturally short.
